What are British Values and how are these embedded into everyday practice?
A huge mistake many people make is thinking the British Values are all about the union flag, big Ben, the Queen, cups of tea, etc. When in fact, this is wrong, British Values relate to promoting Democracy, the Rule of Law, Individual Liberty and Mutual Respect and Tolerance of those with Different Faiths and Beliefs. Many childcare providers are already actively promoting these within their everyday practice.
When people first heard that they were to promote British Values, many were confused and thought it was something new they had to do. However, once people began understanding that it related to what they were doing already people began to relax. Here are a few examples of how British Values can be promoted within the learning environment
- Democracy
Children begin to respect other people views and feeling – this can be promoted during discussion times
Encourage turn-taking, sharing and collaborating – introduce turn taking activities into circle time
Everyone has a voice – encourage children during story time, etc. to share their opinions and encourage children to respect these views
- Rule of Law
Teaching children right from wrong – Helping children to understand consequences
Helping children to create rules- for example, create rules together about tidying up, this will help children understand about rules.

Provides opportunities for children to develop their confidence and self-esteem.
Allow children to take risks
Understand that everyone has different opinions
- Mutual Respect and Tolerance
Create an environment where everyone is treated equally and where different faiths, cultures and races are valued
Share and respect others opinions
Engage with the wider community
Share stories where they promote diverse attitudes and it allows adults and children to challenge stereotypes
