What is Leadership?

Leadership is about having a focus for the future of the setting and making decisions about what, when and how to implement changes for continuous improvement.

Management is to concentrate on getting things done in the most efficient and effective way.

Characteristics of a good leader in an Early Years setting

  1. Showing enthusiasm, passion and dedication for the learning and development of children and families
  2. Understanding what high quality is, identifying it in practice and knowing how to achieve it
  3. Being able to identify and develop the skills and qualities of individual team members — building on their strengths and skills in practice
  4. Being an effective communicator
  5. Understanding the rules of delegating and knowing what and when to do this
  6. Being able to listen to other views, finding out their thoughts and make suggestions together
  7. Being prepared to take on their ideas
  8. Looking at detail and working out what changes need to be made to be more beneficial for all parties
  9. Understanding and implementing the legal responsibilities and making sure others are fully adhering to this in practice
  10. Being able to deal with change in a positive way
