Early Years inspection handbook from Sept 2015

Ofsted have announced the changes they have made on the way they will inspect early years provision, schools and further education and skills.

These changes will come in to effect from September 2015 and include:

  • the introduction of a common inspection framework for everyone
  • short inspections for maintained schools, academies and further education and skills providers that were judged good at their last full inspection. These short inspections will be conducted approximately every 3 years
  • significant changes to Ofsted’s inspection workforce. From September 2015, Ofsted will contract directly with inspectors for maintained schools, academies, non-association independent schools and further education and skills inspections

Early years inspection handbook

This handbook explains the process of how Ofsted inspectors will conduct an inspection, it also sets out the judgments inspectors will makes based on their findings. The handbook is split into two parts.

1. How early years providers with be inspected-This gives an explanation and instructions for inspectors on preparing for and conducting an inspection.

2.The evaluation schedule-This contains information on

The handbook has two parts:

Part 1: How early years providers will be inspected.
This contains instructions and guidance for inspectors on preparing for and conducting early years registered inspections.

Part 2: The evaluation schedule.
This contains guidance for inspectors on judging the quality and standards of early years settings and indicates the main types of evidence used.

This handbook is available to providers and other organisations to make sure that they are informed about inspection processes and procedures. It balances the need for consistent inspection with the flexibility needed to respond to each provider’s individual circumstances. It should not be regarded as inflexible, but simply as an account of normal procedures. This handbook applies from September 2015.
