How prepared are you for the 30hrs free childcare?

Simple steps to help get you prepared for the 30hrs free childcare scheme

As we all know the 3ohrs free childcare scheme is being rolled out across the rest of the country in September. With many providers still uncertain as to whether they are actually going to offer the scheme, it is leaving an uncertainty as to whether there will be enough childcare places.

For providers who are considering offering the scheme, how prepared are you? Recent statistics from a 30hr free funding meeting led by a local authority highlighted that a lot of childcare providers 15 are still not fully prepared for the 30hrs free childcare scheme. Here are a few simple steps to help you start the journey in getting prepared.

1.Survey your parents

Have you asked your current parents who will be with you in Septemeber what hours they would be looking to take up? You may be surprised that only a few parents are eligible for this scheme, or you may find that they only want 20hrs. Doing your research will help get a bigger picture of what your customers want.

2. Number crunching

After collating all your data from parents, begin doing some number crunching and look and what models would make you sustainable. It can be beneficial doing these sums with another colleague as they may have other ideas that may be more effective.

3. Completing a business cash flow forecast

Dont forget to do this as this is important it will help give you an understanding of your finances and whether your business is sustainable. Look at what children who have in your setting and the capacity you could take.

4. Contact other providers nearby

When thinking about how you are going to be able to offer the full 30hrs consider talking to providers that are local and partner up with them for example, a childminder may provide funded hours from 7.30-9 then drop the child off at a preschool who then claims some funded hours with them. Sharing the funding can be an easy and simple way in helping offer the full 30hrs to a family.

5. Attend local meeting

Look out for a meeting to attend regarding the 30hrs free childcare, this is an ideal opportunity to ask them all important questions that are going around in your head. Also, other childcare providers will be there to talk to.

6. Read through the Early years entitlements: operational guidance

This document will help local authorities and providers understand in more detail the Department of Education’s expectations about how the free entitlements should be delivered.

Hopefully this may help get you more prepared.

Good luck
