Developing children’s hand eye coordination

A simple activity to develop children’s hand eye coordination

Do you need help thinking of an activity to help develop children’s hand eye coordination, why not try this simple activity? All you need is a tub of play dough, dried spaghetti and some Cheerios.

How do develop children’s hand eye coordination

Developing hand eye coordination is about helping children to use their eyes to guide the hands in movements. Children explore many objects using their hands; therefore,  it is importnat that practitioners offer these activities. Hand eye coordination can help children catch a ball and develop their writing skills. Young children use these skills to build towers.

Activities promoting hand eye coordination do not need to be difficult there are many simple activities that can be implemented into your everyday practice. This simple activity using spaghetti and cheerios is effective as children have to concentrate and use their hand eye coordination to put the cheerios onto the spaghetti.

As the children’s keep adding Cheerios to create a tall tower they will be proud of their achievements and will want to show their peers what they have achieved. This activity also develops children’s confidence.

How else could you extend this activity or differentiate it for children  who are finding it difficult? One way to make it easier is to use dried pasta tubes instead of cheerios as they have a bigger hole that will help children when threading it onto the dried spaghetti stick.
